From fleece to jumper

About a year passes between a sheep being clipped and a jumper leaving the shop. This is the order it happens in.

  1. Sheep grazing on a green hillside under a blue sky.Shearing in June

Our neighbours’ sheep are clipped by hand on the hill.

  2. Rolls of undyed wool on a spinning machine.Spinning

A small mill on the mainland spins the fleece into 2-ply jumper weight.

  3. Skeins of blue and brown wool in a basket.Dyeing

Indigo, madder and a lichen gold, dyed in small pots behind the shop.

  4. Hands knitting with blue wool on fine needles.Knitting

Bodies on a hand frame, yokes by hand. About 30 hours for a jumper.

  5. A neat stack of finished knitted jumpers in brown and orange.Finishing

Washed, dried flat on a wooden board and checked stitch by stitch.
